Description

Four small paintings, made in wool instead of paint, about the size of a playing card.

Each one is needle-felted onto a thick felt pad: the sky laid down first, then the ground, then every figure worked in on top so it stands slightly proud of the surface. The same technique as the large pieces, done at three inches across, which is the harder way round.

Two of the four show the same yurt in different weather, which is the pleasure of the set — one camp, seen twice.

Yurt in Snow — a white ger on deep snow under a blue sky, roof ropes crossed in black over the dome, a dark doorway and a small finial at the crown, with a folk flower in red and gold opening overhead like a firework.
Grazing Flock — five black-faced sheep heads down in summer grass, an orange sun low on the left and three birds crossing the blue.
Rainbow Hills — two bands of hill, lime over deep green, scattered with red and yellow blooms, three sheep between them and a rainbow rising out of the ridge.
Yurt at Dusk — the same white ger at the end of the day, under a sky banded pink and olive with the sun gone low and rust-colored. Three sheep settled on the ground in front of it, a river curling grey behind them.

A magnet sheet is set into the back, flush and full width, so it holds on a fridge door without sliding. Made from New Zealand wool.

Materials
  • New Zealand wool, needle-felted on a dense wool felt pad.
  • Flexible magnet sheet bonded to the reverse.
  • No frame, no glass, no plastic face.
Dimensions
Approx. 3.25 x 2.25 in (8 x 6 cm).
Approx. 0.3 in (8 mm) thick, including the magnet.
Roughly the footprint of a playing card.
Each piece is made by hand, so edges and sizing vary slightly.
Craft
  1. Needle felting, worked in layers. A barbed needle is punched repeatedly through loose wool to tangle the fibers into solid shape — no glue, no stitching, no thread.
  2. The background goes down first as flat fields of color, then the ground, then each figure is built on top so the sheep, the yurt and the cat sit in slight relief above the surface. At this scale every element is only a few millimeters across, which takes more control than the same motif worked large.
  3. The reverse is a full-width magnet sheet, trimmed to the edge so nothing catches when it slides across a fridge door.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-daylift the magnet off rather than dragging it, which keeps the raised figures from scuffing against the door. A lint roller or a soft brush takes off kitchen dust.

Spot cleaningblot a mark with a barely damp cloth and let it dry flat, face up. Never soak it — water can loosen the bond between the felt and the magnet sheet.

Reshapingif a detail flattens, tease the fibers back up with a fingertip. Store flat rather than stacked under weight.
