Description

Five small elephants walking down a strand, nose to tail, each in a different fleece: rose, turquoise, cream, sage and deep forest green. Every one wears an embroidered blanket scattered with glass beads, with beaded anklets at all four feet.

Between them sit hand-stitched felt cushions in brown, oxblood, peach and ivory, each ringed with tiny seed beads and strung on colored glass. A small brass bell finishes the bottom, and a metal ring at the top hangs it from a single hook.

Strands like this one belong to the toran tradition of South Asia, where a beaded hanging is set at the doorway as a welcome, the bell sounding softly as people pass and the elephant, trunk raised, standing for good fortune. Hang it down a door frame that way, or simply as a long wall piece.

At nearly five feet it suits a doorway, a long wall, the side of a bookcase or a nursery corner. Made from New Zealand wool.

Day-to-dayDust with a soft brush or a cool hairdryer on its lowest setting, working downward so the beadwork is not snagged.

Spot cleaningDab with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then blot dry.

HangingHang from the ring on a single hook, out of direct sun so the dyed felt keeps its color. Lift from the ring rather than pulling the strand.

NeverMachine wash, soak or wring. The strand is beaded on thread.
