Description

All ears, which is how you know it is young.

A calf's ears are enormous against its head — proportionally far larger than a grown elephant's — and that is the whole design here. They flare out wider than the face is tall, each one a grey felt panel with a soft pink lining set inside it.

The trunk curls up and away, and the few dark stitches laid across it are what make it work. Without those ridges it would read as a grey tube; with them, the eye sees the wrinkled skin of a real trunk. Two black eyes, and two raised pink coils for cheeks.

Front and back are cut separately, lightly stuffed and joined with a whip stitch in pale thread left visible all the way round the edge — the seam is part of how it looks, not something hidden.

A pin bar on the back. It works on a coat, a denim jacket, a tote, or a nappy bag. Made from New Zealand wool.

Materials
  • New Zealand wool felt, cut, sewn and lightly stuffed.
  • Pink ear linings and cheeks, applied.
  • Cotton floss embroidery — trunk ridges, eyes and cheek coils.
  • Metal pin bar stitched to the back.
Dimensions
Craft
  1. Cut-and-sew felt work with hand embroidery.
  2. Front and back are cut as separate panels, the pink ear linings set inside the grey ear shapes, then the whole thing joined with a whip stitch in pale thread and lightly stuffed. The stitching is left visible around the entire edge rather than turned inside — on a piece this small a hidden seam would need a bulkier allowance, and the exposed stitch is honest about how it was made.
  3. The trunk is the part that decides whether the piece works. A curl of grey felt on its own reads as nothing in particular. The few dark straight stitches laid horizontally across it are what turn it into a trunk, because the eye recognises the wrinkle pattern before it recognises the shape. They are spaced wider at the base and closer toward the tip, following how the skin actually bunches.
  4. The cheeks are two small coils of pink thread, built up in a tight spiral so they sit raised off the surface rather than flat against it.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Wearing itpin through a sturdy layer — wool coating, denim, canvas, a bag strap. The wide ears catch on bag openings and seat belts, so pin it somewhere it will not be dragged against.

Day-to-daya soft brush lifts dust. Keep a lint roller off the trunk and cheeks, as it can catch the raised stitching.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and dry flat, pin side down. Never soak and never machine wash — the pink ear linings will bleed into the grey.

The earsif one creases from being packed or pressed, flatten it under a book overnight rather than ironing it. Heat mats felt permanently.
