Description

A clear plastic claw clip with green yarn laced along both arms and a crocheted flower sitting at the hinge.

The green is threaded through the gaps between the clip's teeth and carried along the outside edge, so it crosses back and forth over the arm rather than being glued on top. Against clear plastic it reads as a stem growing along the clip, with the plastic showing through the gaps between each crossing.

Sunflower has a brown centre worked as a flat spiral and a ring of yellow petals around it, each petal thick enough to stand up from the disc and throw its own shadow.

Pink Blossom has four broad petals in pink, worked individually and set so they overlap slightly at the middle.

The flower sits at the hinge end, so it faces outward when the clip is closed in the hair and the laced arms run back from it on both sides.

The clip underneath is a full-size claw with a sprung hinge — it holds thick hair, a twist, or a half-up.

Materials
  • Crocheted yarn in green, with yellow and brown or pink depending on the design.
  • Clear plastic claw clip with a sprung metal hinge.

  1. The lacing is the part worth looking at, and it is the part most people would have skipped.
  2. The green yarn is threaded through the gaps between the clip's own teeth and carried back along the outside edge, crossing over the arm again and again down its whole length. It is worked through the clip rather than laid on it. Glued to the surface it would have been a green stripe on a plastic clip — and the first thing to peel. Threaded through, it is held by the clip's own structure and the plastic shows through between every crossing.
  3. That gap is the whole point. Clear plastic behind an open lattice is what makes the green read as a stem running along the clip rather than as trim. A solid-coloured clip underneath would have killed it; so would a solid wrap over the top.
  4. The flower is set at the hinge end rather than midway along an arm. That is where the clip is deepest and least likely to flex, so the flower is anchored to the stiffest part — and it means the flower faces outward when the clip is closed, instead of lying sideways against the head.
  5. On the Sunflower, the brown centre is a flat spiral worked in rounds, and the yellow petals are a separate round worked around it in a thick stitch so each petal stands up from the disc and casts its own shadow. That depth difference between the flat centre and the raised petals is what gives the flower a face. Worked all at one height, it would have been a yellow circle with a brown dot.
  6. On the Pink Blossom, the four petals are worked individually and set to overlap slightly where they meet, so they sit at different heights rather than radiating flat from one point.
  7. The clip underneath is a full-size claw with a sprung hinge, not a small decorative one — it will actually hold a twist or a half-up.
Product Care

The yarn is threaded through the clip rather than glued on, so it is more secure than most crochet-on-plastic — but the crossings can still be snagged.

The lacingif a crossing lifts, ease it back down along the arm rather than pulling the yarn tight, which draws slack out of the neighbouring crossings and leaves a gap.

Opening itpress the arms rather than prising the jaws apart at the teeth, which is where the lacing runs.

The flowerthe petals stand up from the centre and will flatten if stored under weight. Lift them back with your fingers and they hold.

Cleaningspot clean with a barely damp cloth and air dry. Never submerge — water gets behind the lacing where it cannot dry, and strong yellow or pink against green will bleed.

Hairsprayspray before clipping in, not after. Product dries stiff in yarn and dulls the colour in a way it does not on bare plastic.
