Description

A felted alpaca in a chullo — the Andean earflap hat with long braided ties hanging down either side.

His fleece is a warm russet brown with a dense crimped surface, left undyed and unsmoothed so the texture stands up off the body the way a huacaya alpaca's does. Cream at the muzzle, black at the four hooves, a single black bead eye and a stitched mouth.

The hat is knitted separately in slate blue with cream bands, and the braids are plaited from both colours together with a tassel at each end. One braid falls down his neck, the other across his chest.

A plaited cream loop at the crown, so he hangs — from a tree, a shelf edge, a drawer pull, a bag.

He stands on his own four feet as well.

Made from New Zealand wool.

  • New Zealand wool, felted.
  • Undyed russet brown fleece with cream muzzle and black hooves.
  • Knitted hat in dyed slate blue and cream, with plaited ties.
  • Black bead eye.
  • Plaited cream hanging loop.

Craft
  1. The hat is a chullothe Andean earflap cap, knitted with a pointed crown, banded in a contrast colour and finished with a long plaited tie at each ear. Alpacas and the chullo come from the same high country, which is why this pairing is a joke with a straight face rather than a random costume.
  2. It is knitted separately and fitted on, not felted into the head. That is the harder way and the right one — a felted-on hat would have been a shape; a knitted one is a garment, with its own stitch structure at a different scale from the body underneath. You can see the knitting as knitting, which is what makes it read as something he is wearing.
  3. The ties are plaited from both colours together rather than from one, so blue and cream twist around each other down the length and each ends in a tassel where the plait is let go. Plaited in a single colour they would have been cords. Two-colour, they are the braid on a real chullo.
  4. The fleece is where the material does the work. It is left with its crimp intact rather than felted smooth — the surface is dense and curled rather than flat, so it catches light unevenly all over and reads as a fleece instead of a skin. That is the look of a huacaya alpaca, the crimped-fleece type, as opposed to the suri's long silky locks. Felted hard and smooth, he would have come out looking like a toy horse.
  5. The brown is the fleece's own colour, undyed. Alpaca and sheep fleece both come in a range of natural browns, and leaving one unddyed means the colour varies slightly across the body the way a real fleece does rather than sitting flat.
  6. One eye, set on the side of the head. Alpacas have laterally placed eyes and you only ever see one at a time in profile. Two eyes placed forward would have made him a cartoon.
  7. The hanging loop is plaited rather than a single strand, so it holds its shape open instead of collapsing flat, and four feet are finished in black so he stands as well as hangs.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-dayair him rather than wash him. Wool sheds dust and odour on its own given a few hours somewhere with moving air.

The fleecethe crimp is the point, so do not brush it flat. If it compresses in storage, work it back up with your fingertips rather than a comb.

The tiesthe plaits will loosen at the tassel end with handling. Roll the end between finger and thumb to tighten it rather than knotting it.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and let him dry standing. Never submerge — the blue is dyed and the body is not, and that is the pairing that runs.

Hanging himuse the loop rather than the hat. The hat is fitted on, not felted in, and will come off a hook before he does.
