Description

Five felted animals and six leaves hanging at different depths from a green felted ring, under a cluster of wool beads.

The animals are a tiger, an elephant, a zebra, a giraffe and a lion. Each one is felted in the round and finished on both sides — which matters here more than on anything that sits on a shelf, because a mobile turns, and a baby lying underneath sees every one of them from behind as often as from the front.

They hang at six different lengths. Nothing is level with anything else, so the whole thing reads as depth rather than as a row, and the animals pass each other as it turns instead of moving as a block.

Between them hang six felted leaves in two greens, cut long and pointed. They are what makes it a canopy rather than a carousel — the animals are among foliage, not circling in open air.

The ring itself is wool felted over a form, in a soft green, with the cords emerging from the top. Above it, five wool beads in purple, rust, brown and mustard sit at the cord junction, with a sixth mustard bead hanging below the centre.

A mobile is the one object in a nursery that is only ever seen from below, and almost nothing on the market is made for that.
Every animal here is felted in the round and finished on both sides. That is not a flourish — a mobile turns, and a baby lying under it sees each animal from behind as often as from the front. Flat two-sided cut-outs, or figures with a worked face and a blank back, go blank for half of every rotation. These do not. The zebra's stripes carry round her flanks, the elephant is the same elephant from either side, and the giraffe's patches run over the top of his back.
The drop lengths are all different. Six cords, six lengths, nothing level with anything else. Hung at a single height the animals would have moved as a block and the whole thing would have read as a ring. Staggered, they pass each other as it turns, and from underneath you get depth instead of a row — which is the entire difference between a mobile that holds attention and one that is simply there.
The leaves are what make it a canopy rather than a carousel. Six of them in two greens, long and pointed, hung between the animals rather than beneath them. Take them away and you have five animals circling in open air. Leave them in and the animals are among foliage — you are looking up through something at them.
They are also cut in two distinct greens rather than one, so the foliage has its own depth and does not flatten into a single band of colour as it rotates.
The ring is wool felted over a rigid form rather than yarn wound round a hoop. Wound yarn leaves a spiral seam and goes slack over time, and a slack ring hangs out of true. Felted over the form, the surface is continuous and the ring holds its circle, which is what keeps the drops even and the whole thing level.
The beads above the ring are not decoration alone. They sit at the junction where six cords meet, which is the one place the eye goes when a mobile is still — and they give that junction something to be, instead of a knot.

Safety firstthis is a decorative mobile, not a toy. Hang it well out of a child's reach, clear of where a standing toddler or a child in a cot could take hold of a cord. Remove it once a child can push up on hands and knees.

Hanging ituse a fixed ceiling hook or a bracket that takes the weight on its own. Let it hang free so the ring can find level, then check that the drops are not touching.

If it hangs crookedthe cords have settled unevenly at the top knot rather than the ring having warped. Ease them through the junction until it sits true.

Tanglesa mobile left to spin one way will wind its cords. Give it an occasional turn the other way rather than letting it unwind under its own weight, which stresses the attachment points.

Dustingit is hanging in still air, so it will gather dust on the upper surfaces. Lift it down and air it, or go over it with a soft brush. Never submerge — the ring has a form inside it that will not dry.
