Description

A felted goose in a blue kerchief, tied under the bill with a lilac cord, sitting with a brown bundle held against her front.

The kerchief is the whole character. It covers the crown and comes down past her cheeks to her shoulders, leaving only the face open — and it is tied under the chin in a real bow, with two tails hanging loose down her front. That is the Mother Goose silhouette exactly: the headscarf knotted at the throat is what the figure has always been drawn in.

Her body is left plain undyed cream, with no markings anywhere. Against it the blue reads bright, the bill reads bright, and your eye goes straight to the face.

The bill is a separate piece in deep marigold, broad and flat and standing forward from the face, with a small red mark at the tip. Two black eyes set wide above it.

Two orange webbed feet at the base, flat enough that she sits on a shelf as readily as she hangs.

A plaited cream loop at the crown.

Made from New Zealand wool.

Please note: small parts. Not suitable for children under three.

Craft
  1. Everything here is spent on the head, and the body is left alone. That is the decision the whole piece rests on.
  2. The kerchief covers the crown and comes down past her cheeks to the shoulders, leaving only the face open. It is felted as its own layer over the head rather than being the head worked in blue, so there is a visible edge where it meets the cream — a hem, in effect — and you can read it as cloth laid over her rather than colour painted on.
  3. And it is tied in a real bow. The lilac cord passes under the chin, crosses, and is knotted into a loop with two tails hanging loose down her front. A felted-on V-shape in the same place would have suggested a tie. An actual knot with slack in it is a tie, and it is what makes the kerchief read as something she put on this morning.
  4. The contrast colour on the cord is the other half of that. In the same blue the tie would have disappeared into the scarf. In lilac it separates, and the eye follows it down from the chin.
  5. The body is plain undyed cream, with nothing on it anywhere. No markings, no wing detail, no shading. Against that blank, the blue reads bright, the marigold bill reads bright, and the eye goes straight where it should. Shade the body and the face stops being the loudest thing on her.
  6. The bill is a separate shaped piece set forward from the face rather than felted flat onto it, broad and slightly down-turned, with a small red mark at the tip. Flush with the head it would have read as a yellow patch. Projecting, it throws a shadow onto the cream and gives the face a profile.
  7. The feet are webbed and felted flat at the base, which is why she sits on a shelf as readily as she hangs — most hanging ornaments can only do the one thing.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-dayair her rather than wash her. Wool sheds dust and odour on its own given a few hours somewhere with moving air.

The tieit is a real knot with loose tails and will work loose with handling. Snug it back up rather than pulling the tails, which only tightens the knot against the chin.

The cream bodyit is undyed and unshaded, which means it shows marks more than a patterned piece would. Keep her off newsprint and away from hands straight out of the kitchen.

Hanging heruse the loop at the crown, not the kerchief or the tie. She also sits upright on a flat surface if you would rather stand her.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and let her dry upright. Never submerge — blue over an undyed cream body is exactly the pairing that runs, and a cream goose will not survive it.

Small partsthe eyes and the bundle are small and separately attached. Not suitable for children under three.
