Description

A cobalt butterfly carrying a bit of the meadow with it.

The wings are built from two materials doing two different jobs. The long cream ovals radiating out from the body are felted wool, laid on and punched down so they sit slightly raised — those are the wing cells, and they read as structure. The rows of short dashes further out are cotton running stitch, worked in cream floss across the blue. Thread holds a finer, straighter line than wool can at that scale, which is why the outer wings look ruled and the inner ones look grown.

Two daisies with orange centres sit on the lower right wing, and only there. A butterfly with flowers on its wing is not something that happens in nature, and putting them on one side rather than both is what keeps it from looking like a repeating pattern.

The body is a thick felted bar down the centre, and the antennae are black felted cord with a curl worked into each tip.

A pin bar on the back, bound on with blue yarn. Made from New Zealand wool.

  • New Zealand wool, needle-felted.
  • Felted cream wing markings and daisies, applied.
  • Cotton floss running stitch across the outer wings.
  • Black felted cord antennae.
  • Metal pin bar bound on with blue yarn.

Craft
  1. Two materials, two jobs.
  2. The long cream ovals radiating out from the body are felted wool, laid onto the blue and punched down so they sit slightly raised. They are the wing cells, and because they are wool they keep soft edges and read as structure that grew there.
  3. The rows of short dashes further out are cotton running stitch in cream floss. Thread holds a finer and straighter line than wool can at this scale, so the outer wings look ruled while the inner ones look grown. Worked in wool, those dashes would blur into the blue within a few millimetres; worked in thread, they stay crisp.
  4. The daisies sit on the lower right wing and nowhere else. A butterfly with flowers on its wing is not something nature does, and placing them on one side rather than mirroring them is what stops the piece reading as a repeating pattern rather than a picture.
  5. The antennae are black felted cord with a curl worked into each tip — the one part of the brooch that sticks up away from the body.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Wearing itpin through a sturdy layer — wool coating, denim, canvas, a bag strap. The wings are wide and flat, so a soft fabric will let the whole thing tip forward; go through a seam or a doubled section.

The antennaethese stand away from the body and will catch in a bag or a scarf before anything else does. If one bends out of shape, roll the curl back between finger and thumb.

Day-to-daya soft brush lifts dust. Keep a lint roller off the wings — it will snag the running stitch, which sits proud of the felt.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and dry flat, pin side down. Never soak and never machine wash — this depth of blue will bleed into every cream marking on the wings.
