Description

A toadstool with somebody living in it.

The cap is deep red felt with cream spots and a single green sprout pushing out near the crown. Below it the stem widens into a cottage wall: a blue door set into the felt with a dark cross-bar across it, a log leaning against the wall beside it, and a garden stitched straight onto the white — three flowers in pink, chartreuse and purple, and three tufts of teal grass coming up at the base.

The flowers and grass are thread embroidery, not felted wool, which is why they sit crisp and fine against the soft nap. The door and log are cut felt, appliquéd on.

The whole piece is sewn and lightly stuffed, so it has a pillowed give rather than the flatness of a printed magnet, and a magnet sheet across the back holds it to a fridge door.

Made from New Zealand wool.

Materials
  • New Zealand wool felt, sewn and lightly stuffed.
  • Cut-felt door and log, appliqued on.
  • Cotton floss embroidery for the flowers and grass.
  • Magnet sheet bonded to the reverse.

Craft
  1. Two techniques on one piece. The cap, stem, door and log are cut from wool felt and stitched together, then lightly stuffed so the shape stands away from the wall rather than lying flat.
  2. The garden is thread embroidery worked directly into the stemthree flowers in pink, chartreuse and purple, each a few stitches wide, and three tufts of grass in teal. Thread holds a finer line than felted wool can, which is why the stems read as stems at this scale instead of blurring into the nap.
  3. The spots on the cap are felt rounds set into the red, and a single green sprout is let into the crown.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-daylift it off rather than dragging it, so the embroidery does not catch. A soft brush or lint roller takes off kitchen dust.

Spot cleaningblot a mark with a barely damp cloth, working around the stitching rather than over it, and dry flat and face up. Do not soak — water can loosen the magnet bond and bleed the red into the cream.

Loose threadsif a stitch pulls, ease it back with a needle rather than cutting it, since the embroidery runs continuously across the stem.
