Description

A fox with its eyes shut, entirely untroubled.

The head is cut from deep rust felt and lightly stuffed, with cream cheek panels and cream ear linings laid over the top and stitched down — the running stitch left visible around each edge rather than hidden, so you can see how it was put together. A black felt triangle for the nose.

The eyes are the whole character: two closed arcs embroidered in black, each with three lashes dropping below. Open eyes would have made an alert fox. Closed ones make a contented one.

Across the brow, rows of raised ochre dots — French knots, worked one at a time by wrapping the thread around the needle before it goes back through. They catch the light differently to the flat felt around them, which is what gives the forehead the dappled look of real guard hairs.

A pin bar on the back. It sits well on a coat lapel, a denim jacket or a tote. Made from New Zealand wool.

Materials
  • New Zealand wool felt, cut, sewn and lightly stuffed.
  • Cream cheek and ear panels, black felt nose, appliqued on.
  • Cotton floss embroidery — closed eyes, lashes and French knots.
  • Metal pin bar on the back.

Craft
  1. Cut-and-sew felt work with hand embroidery, rather than sculptural needle felting.
  2. The head is cut from rust felt and lightly stuffed, then the cream cheek panels, ear linings and black nose are laid on top and stitched down. The running stitch around each panel is deliberately left on the surface instead of buried in a seam — the construction is part of the look.
  3. The eyes are two closed arcs with three lashes dropping from each. It is a small decision that does all the workopen eyes would read alert, even sly, which is the usual fox. Closed, the whole face goes soft.
  4. The brow is covered in French knots in ochre thread. Each one is made by wrapping the floss around the needle two or three times before pushing it back through the felt, so the knot sits raised on the surface. They are worked individually, a few dozen of them, and they catch light at a different angle to the flat felt around them — which is what reads as the dappled guard hair along a real fox's forehead.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Wearing itpin through a sturdy layer — wool coating, denim, canvas, a bag strap. On fine knits the weight can pull, so go through a seam or a doubled section.

Day-to-daya soft brush lifts dust. Avoid dragging a lint roller across the brow — it can snag the raised French knots.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and dry flat, pin side down. Never soak and never machine wash — the rust will bleed into the cream cheeks.

Loose threadsif a knot works loose, ease it back with a needle rather than cutting it; the knots are worked in continuous rows and cutting one can release its neighbours.
