Description

A pair of bunny ears standing straight up out of a Christmas bow.

These are crocheted rather than felted — worked stitch by stitch in the round, with the inner panel of each ear crocheted directly into the ear in a contrasting yarn rather than sewn on afterwards, so there is no seam where the two colours meet.

Frost White is made in a fuzzy eyelash yarn that gives the whole thing a frosted halo, and its two ears deliberately do not match: one lined in green, the other in red. It is finished with a red-and-green striped grosgrain bow edged in gold, a cluster of pearl beads at the knot, and a puff of white marabou tucked behind so the bow stands away from the crochet instead of lying flat on it.

Holly Red is the traditional one — red throughout with both ears lined in green, a red velvet bow flecked with gold glitter, white marabou, and a small brass bell that actually rings.

The back is a metal snap clip mounted on a felt pad, which is what keeps the metal off the scalp and stops it catching hair on the way in.

Materials
  • Crocheted yarn — fuzzy eyelash yarn on Frost White, worsted yarn on Holly Red.
  • Grosgrain ribbon bow (Frost White) or velvet glitter bow (Holly Red).
  • White marabou trim.
  • Pearl-effect beads (Frost White) or a small brass bell (Holly Red).
  • Metal snap clip on a felt-covered pad.
Dimensions
Craft
  1. Crochet rather than felt, which makes this a departure from the rest of the collection.
  2. Each ear is worked stitch by stitch in the round, and the contrasting inner panel is crocheted directly into the ear as the work progresses rather than cut and sewn on afterwards. That is why there is no seam, no stitched outline and no raw edge where the two colours meet — the colour change happens inside the fabric itself.
  3. On Frost White the yarn is a fuzzy eyelash type, which carries a halo of loose fibre and softens every stitch into the next. The two ears are deliberately mismatched, one lined in green and one in red. A matched pair would have been easier and would have read as plainer.
  4. The marabou behind each bow is doing a structural job as well as a decorative oneit lifts the bow away from the crochet so it sits proud rather than flattening against the surface.
  5. The clip is a metal snap mounted on a felt-covered pad. The felt is not cosmetic — it is what keeps bare metal off the scalp and stops the clip catching hair as it goes in.
Product Care

A trimmed hair clip needs gentler handling than a plain one — several different materials are sitting on one small piece.

Small partsthe pearl beads and the bell are small and attached to trim rather than to the body. Not suitable for children under three, and worth checking occasionally on an older child.

The marabouit flattens if the clip is kept in a crowded drawer. Fluff it back with your fingers, and store the clip loose rather than pressed under other things.

The eyelash yarnon Frost White, never pull a loose strand — snip it level with the surface instead, as tugging will draw the stitch it belongs to out of shape.

Cleaningspot clean only, with a barely damp cloth, keeping water away from the marabou and the ribbon. Never submerge — the bow, the bell mount and the felt pad are all glued or stitched to a backing that water will loosen.
