Description

A felted snowman in a wide russet hat and a brown scarf, with cream cross-stitches worked across both.

There is no red and no green on him anywhere. The whole piece is rust, brown and undyed cream — a winter snowman rather than a Christmas one, which means he sits in a neutral room in January without looking like something that should have come down.

The hat has a broad soft brim that dips lower on one side than the other. It is not a disc set on his head; it has been given a slouch, the way a felt hat goes once somebody has actually worn it.

The cream cross-stitches are real embroidery worked through the felt — scattered across the hat brim, along the scarf at his throat, and on down the hanging tail. The same stitch in all three places, which is what ties the hat and the scarf together as one outfit instead of two separate accessories.

Three buttons down his front, each a rust ring around a cream centre, so every one has a rim and a middle rather than being a flat dot.

A carrot nose that stands out from the face, two black bead eyes and a stitched black smile.

A jute loop at the crown, for a tree, a hook or a shelf edge.

Made from New Zealand wool.

Please note: small parts. Not suitable for children under three.

Craft
  1. The palette is the first decision, and it is a restraint rather than an addition.
  2. There is no red and no green anywhere on him. Rust, brown and undyed cream, and nothing else. Almost every felted snowman on the market arrives in Christmas colours, which fixes it to about five weeks of the year. Take those two colours away and he becomes a winter object instead of a December one — he sits in a neutral room in January, or on a shelf all through February, without looking like something that should have come down weeks ago.
  3. The cross-stitches are real embroidery worked through the felt in cream thread, not printed marks or felted dots. They appear in three placesscattered across the hat brim, along the scarf at his throat, and on down the hanging tail.
  4. Using the same stitch in all three is what ties the hat and the scarf together as one outfit rather than two separate accessories that happen to be on the same snowman. It is a small consistency and it does a disproportionate amount of work.
  5. They are also scattered rather than evenly spaced. A regular row of crosses reads as a border. Crosses at uneven intervals read as mending — the stitch you put in when something has been repaired, which is exactly the association a hand-made winter object wants.
  6. The hat brim is broad, soft, and deliberately lower on one side than the other. It is not a disc set flat on his headit has been given a slouch, the way a felt hat goes once somebody has actually worn it. A symmetrical brim would have read as a prop balanced on top of him.
  7. The buttons are two-tone — a rust ring felted around a cream centre, so each one has a rim and a middle. A flat dot of rust would have been a dot. The ring gives it an edge, and an edge gives it a shadow.
  8. The nose is a felted cone that projects forward from the face rather than sitting flush with it, with the taper worked in so it narrows to a point. Felted flat, an orange triangle on a white sphere reads as a mark. Built out, it reads as a carrot pushed into snow — which is the one detail that makes a white ball into a snowman.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-dayair him rather than wash him. Wool sheds dust and odour on its own given a few hours somewhere with moving air.

The cream bodyit is undyed and unshaded, so it shows marks more than a patterned piece would. Handle him by the hat or the base rather than the middle of the body.

The stitchesthey sit on the surface and can catch on a branch. If one lifts, ease it flat rather than pulling the thread, which draws the cross out of shape.

The hat brimthe slouch is deliberate. If it flattens under weight in storage, work the dip back in with your fingers.

Hanging himuse the jute loop, not the hat or the scarf tail.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and dry upright. Never submerge — rust and brown over an undyed cream body is the pairing that runs, and a cream snowman does not survive it.
