Description
A felted rabbit in a red hood, with a vine of red berries running across her belly and a scatter of glass beads up both ears.
The hood comes right over her head and down past her shoulders, with her face framed in a ruff of curled cream fleece — and her two long ears come up out of it, one red and one cream. Not a matched pair. One of each.
Each ear is studded with small glass beads in orange, blue, purple, yellow, green and red, set at no particular spacing. That rainbow is the thing that decides what she is: it is not a Christmas palette, and it pulls her out of December and into the whole year.
Across her belly runs a needle-felted vine — a green stem with red berries along it and a row more beneath, in the manner of rowan, the mountain ash whose berry clusters have been hung in doorways as a charm against harm for as long as anyone has written it down.
Black bead eyes, a felted black nose and two pink cheeks. Two cream feet at the base.
A jute loop at the crown, for a branch, a hook, a handle or a bag.
Made from New Zealand wool.
Please note: glass beads, small parts. Not suitable for children under three.

Craft
- The ears do not match, and that is the decision everything else follows from.
- One is red, one is cream. A matched pair would have been the obvious choice and would have read as a costume — a rabbit wearing a red hood with two red ears, tidy and closed. One of each makes the hood look like something she put on over herself, with her own cream ear coming out one side and the hood's colour carrying up the other. It is asymmetric on purpose, and asymmetry is what stops a small round object looking manufactured.
- The beads are set by hand with no spacing rule — different colours, different heights, no two ears alike. Six coloursorange, blue, purple, yellow, green, red. Laid out in a regular line in two colours they would have read as a pattern stitched onto an ear. Scattered, they read as something somebody put there one at a time.
- That rainbow is also what settles the season. Red hood and red berries on green pull towards Christmas; a scatter of orange, blue, purple and yellow glass pulls straight back out of it. She is a folk charm rather than a December decoration, and she will hang on a handle in April without looking like something left up too long.
- The berry vine on her belly is needle-felted directly into the surface rather than appliquéd on top — a green stem laid in, red berries worked over it, and a second row of berries beneath the stem. Worked into the fleece, the motif sits level with the body and reads as marking rather than as a patch sewn on. The green of the stem shows through between the berries where the stem passes behind them, which only happens if the stem goes down first.
- The berries are rowan — mountain ash — or near enough. Rowan clusters have been hung in doorways and over byres as a charm against harm for as long as anybody has been writing such things down, which makes them a reasonable thing to find on an object that is itself a charm.
- The face is framed in a ruff of curled cream fleece left deliberately unsmoothed, so the texture changes at the hood linedense flat felt for the hood, open curl for the face. That change in surface is what separates the two without needing an outline.
