Description

An elephant dressed for a procession. Over his back lies a two-layer blanket: a magenta ground run through with a yellow dashed stitch, and a cobalt panel over it scattered with eight-pointed stars in marigold, orange and teal, with small raised knots of crimson between them. A matching cobalt panel comes down over his brow and ends in a point between his eyes.

This is a caparison, the ceremonial cloth an elephant wears for a festival, and the piece is a felted version of a tradition that runs through South Asian processions and the beaded hangings made alongside them.

Underneath it he is all natural fleece, undyed and heathered through with lighter hairs. He is wet-felted dense enough to stand on his own four legs, with a ribbed trunk curling under, pale tusks and ears that stand away from his head.

About ten inches nose to tail, so he holds a shelf, a mantel or a windowsill without being swallowed by it. Made from New Zealand wool.

Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-dayDust with a soft brush or a cool hairdryer on its lowest setting, working around the embroidery rather than over it.

Spot cleaningDab with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then blot dry. Keep water off the dyed felt, which sits against undyed fleece.

DisplayKeep him out of direct sun so the cobalt and magenta hold their depth. Lift him by the body rather than the trunk or tusks.

NeverMachine wash or soak.
