Description

A felted reindeer in a red crocheted scarf, standing on four long legs with a red nose and a crown of antlers.

The red nose is closer to true than most people realise. Reindeer have an unusually dense network of blood vessels packed into the nose, which warms freezing air before it reaches the lungs — and under a thermal camera a reindeer's nose really does glow red against the rest of its face. It is one of the few Christmas details that turns out to be grounded in the animal.

The body is undyed. What you see is the fleece's own colour, heathered rather than flat, with paler fibres running through the brown so the surface shifts as the light moves. Only the nose and the scarf are dyed.

The antlers stand up as a branching cluster of six tines off a short beam, left deliberately simple — more the suggestion of a rack than an attempt at a real one, which is right at this size.

The scarf is genuinely crocheted, not felted: a band of worked stitches wound once at the throat with two tails hanging down his shoulder, so you can read the loops.

Four long slender legs hold him well clear of the ground, a small felted tail at the back, ears out to the sides and a single black bead eye on each side of the head.

On a plaited jute cord.

Made from New Zealand wool.

Please note: small parts. Not suitable for children under three.

  1. The body is undyed, and that is the first thing to look at.
  2. What you see is the fleece's own colour. It is heathered rather than flat — paler fibres running through the brown, with the tone shifting slightly across the back and down the legs, because no two parts of a fleece are quite the same shade. A dyed brown comes out even everywhere, and even is the thing that reads as manufactured.
  3. Only two elements on him are dyedthe nose and the scarf. Everything else is wool as it grew.
  4. The red nose is closer to true than most people assume. Reindeer carry an unusually dense network of blood vessels in the nose, which warms freezing air on the way to the lungs — and under a thermal camera a reindeer's nose genuinely glows red against the rest of the face. It is one of the very few Christmas details that turns out to be grounded in the actual animal rather than invented for it.
  5. The scarf is crocheted, not felted, and that distinction matters at this scale. Felted, it would be a red band — a stripe of colour at the throat with no structure. Crocheted, it has visible worked loops, and because the stitch is readable it registers as a garment made separately and put on him. The tails hang loose over one shoulder rather than being tacked flat, so it moves.
  6. The antlers are deliberately simplifiedsix tines off a short beam, standing up as a branching cluster rather than an anatomically plotted rack. At this size, a detailed set of antlers becomes a thicket — the eye cannot resolve it and the silhouette turns to mush. Six clean uprights read as antlers from across a room, which is where an ornament is seen from.
  7. The legs are long, slender and straight, holding the body well clear of the ground. That is a real risk in felta thin leg has to be worked dense enough to carry weight without a wire inside, or it bends under the body. Four of them, each the same length, is the part of this piece most likely to go wrong.
  8. The eyes are set one on each side of the head rather than forward, which is how a prey animal's eyes sit. In profile you only ever see one.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-dayair him rather than wash him. Wool sheds dust and odour on its own given a few hours somewhere with moving air.

The legsthey are slender and carry the whole body. Lift him by the body rather than by a leg, and do not let him sit under weight in storage.

The antlersthe tines stand upright and will lean if pressed. Work one back along its length with your fingers rather than bending it at the base.

The scarfcrocheted and loose at the tails, so it can snag. Lift it clear of a branch rather than pulling him through.

Hanging himuse the jute cord, not an antler.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and dry standing. Never submerge — the body is undyed and the nose and scarf are not, and red bleeding into natural brown cannot be undone.
