Description

A picture in a frame, and the frame is made of mushroom.

The deep red border scattered with cream dots is the exact colouring of a fly agaric cap — so the purse surrounds its own subject with the subject's own markings. Inside it sits an olive panel, stitched down with a visible cream running stitch, holding two toadstools on a ground freckled with brown.

The two kinds of dot are made differently, and the difference is the point. The cream dots on the red frame are applied rounds that stand proud of the surface; the brown dots on the olive field are felted flush into it. Raised dots on the border, flat dots in the picture — which is what makes the frame read as a frame and the panel read as something you are looking into rather than at.

Two caps, a large one and a small one beside it, each spotted and standing on a thick cream stem.

It has the shape of a sampler — the bordered panel of motifs a needleworker makes to show what they can do — scaled down to something that holds coins and a key.

Metal zip along the top with a red felted ball for the pull. The back is plain red.

Made from New Zealand wool.

Craft
  1. Applied felt on a felted ground, worked in two deliberate registers.
  2. The olive panel is laid onto the red body and stitched down with a cream running stitch left visible all the way round, which is what turns an applied patch into a framed picture.
  3. The dots are the real decision. On the red border they are separate felt rounds laid on and punched down, so they stand proud and catch the light. On the olive field they are felted flush into the surface, level with the ground around them. Same motif, two techniques — raised on the frame, flat in the picture. It is what gives the panel the look of something you are seeing into rather than something printed on top.
  4. The border colouring is not incidental eitherdeep red scattered with cream is exactly a fly agaric cap, so the frame is made of the same thing the picture is about.
  5. The caps are cut felt with their own spots worked in, standing on thick cream stems, and set at two different sizes so the pair reads as a clump rather than a repeat.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-daya soft brush lifts dust. Keep a lint roller off the border, where the raised cream dots can catch and pull.

The running stitchit is on the surface rather than hidden in a seam, so if a stitch snags, ease it back with a needle rather than cutting it — the line runs continuously around the panel.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and dry fully open so the zip tape dries too. Never soak and never machine wash — deep red against cream and olive is a bad combination for bleeding, and the white cap spots would go first.

Reshapingif it flattens in a bag, press it back with your fingers while empty.
