Description

Three toadstools on a green rise, and only one of them is a house.

That restraint is what makes the scene work. The big central cap has a home built into its stem — a round grey window with a brown cross-bar dividing it into four panes, an arched brown door, and a grey stone step worn into the ground at the threshold. The two smaller mushrooms either side have nothing. No doors, no windows, just mushrooms.

Give all three a door and it becomes a village. Give one a door and it becomes somebody's home, standing among ordinary toadstools.

The round window is a bullseye — the small circular window that sits high in a cottage gable, traditionally where there is no room for a square one. At this size it is four stitches and a disc of grey felt, and it does more for the idea of a house than the door does.

The whole scene is cut felt, each shape laid on and stitched down with a fine outline left visible around its edge. The white cap spots are raised rounds rather than flat patches, so they catch light across the red.

All of it on a deep navy ground, which is an unusual choice for a toadstool and the reason the red reads as hot rather than sweet.

Metal zip along the top with a navy felted ball pull. The back is plain.

Made from New Zealand wool.

Materials
  • New Zealand wool, felted into a flat pouch.
  • Cut-felt caps, stems, hill and cottage details, applied and stitched down.
  • Raised felted rounds for the cap spots.
  • Cotton thread for the window bars and outlines.
  • Metal zip with a navy felted wool ball pull.

Craft
  1. Cut-felt appliqué on a felted ground, with the outlines left on show.
  2. Each shape — hill, cap, stem, door, window — is cut separately, laid onto the navy and stitched down with a fine line of thread left visible around its edge. Nothing is turned under or hidden. On a dark ground that visible outline is what keeps each shape legible; sewn invisibly, the white stems would float and the green hill would bleed into the blue.
  3. The cap spots are made differently from everything else. They are raised rounds rather than flat patches, so they sit above the red and catch light across the curve of the cap. Flat, they would read as a printed polka dot.
  4. The cottage is four small decisionsa grey disc for the window, a brown cross-bar stitched over it to make four panes, an arched brown door, and a grey stone step worn into the ground at the threshold. That round window is a bullseye — the small circular window set high in a cottage gable where a square one will not fit — and at this size it does more for the idea of a house than the door does.
  5. The two flanking mushrooms are left plain on purpose. Three doors would make a village; one door makes a home standing among ordinary toadstools.
Product Care

Pure New Zealand pasture wool naturally repels dust and light spills thanks to its dense, organic fiber structure.

Day-to-daya soft brush lifts dust. Navy wool shows lint badly, so brush rather than reaching for a roller, which can lift the raised cap spots.

The outlinesthe appliqué stitching sits on the surface rather than hidden in a seam. If a stitch catches, ease it back with a needle instead of cutting it — the line runs continuously around each shape.

Spot cleaningblot with a barely damp cloth and dry fully open so the zip tape dries too. Never soak and never machine wash — navy and red against white stems and spots is the worst case for bleeding, and the cap spots would go first.

Reshapingif it flattens in a bag, press it back with your fingers while empty.
